    Servo Hits crates.io, Cursor Goes Multi-Agent, and the Case for Lazy LLMs

    The AI and developer tooling space keeps moving. Here is what caught my eye today.

    TL;DR: Servo browser engine just dropped on crates.io as an embeddable Rust library. Cursor 3.1 shipped tiled agent layouts for running multiple AI coding assistants in parallel. And a sharp observation from Bryan Cantrill on why LLMs lack the laziness that makes humans useful.

    Servo Finally Hits crates.io

    Servo, the browser engine originally developed by Mozilla, is now available as an embeddable Rust crate. Version 0.1.0 hit crates.io today.

    This is a big deal if you need a headless browser engine in Rust. The API centers around ServoBuilder, WebView, and pixel readback. Simon Willison already kicked the tires and built a servo-shot CLI tool that renders URLs to PNG. It compiles against stable Rust and uses a software-based rendering pipeline.

    The Servo team also announced an LTS release track. Breaking changes are expected in monthly releases, but LTS users get security updates and migration guides on a half-yearly schedule.

    Then check the embedder docs for the full API. Compiling Servo itself to WebAssembly is not feasible due to heavy thread usage and SpiderMonkey dependencies, but the html5ever crate (used for HTML parsing) has a WASM build you can play with here.

    Cursor 3.1: Parallel Agents, Better Voice

    Cursor 3.1 dropped with a set of quality-of-life improvements to the Agents Window. The headline feature is tiled layout: you can now split your view into panes and run several agents in parallel. Compare outputs side by side without tab-jumping. Your layout persists across sessions.

    Other additions:

    • Upgraded voice input: Full voice clip recording with batch STT transcription. Press and hold Ctrl+M to dictate. Waveform, timer, and cancel/confirm buttons included.
    • Branch selection in empty state: Launch a cloud agent against a specific branch before starting the conversation. Cuts out the step of switching branches afterward.
    • Diff-to-file navigation: Jump from a diff straight to the exact line in the file.
    • Include/exclude filters in "Search in Files": Scope code searches to specific file sets.

    The Agents Window is getting real substance. Cursor is betting that power users want to run multiple agents simultaneously across repos and environments. The UX is shaping up to support that without turning into chaos.

    The Peril of Laziness Lost

    Simon Willison surfaced a quotable take from Bryan Cantrill today. The observation:

    "The problem is that LLMs inherently lack the virtue of laziness. Work costs nothing to an LLM. LLMs do not feel a need to optimize for their own (or anyone's) future time, and will happily dump more and more onto a layercake of garbage."

    The argument is that human laziness is a feature, not a bug. Our finite time forces us to build crisp abstractions. We skip the cruft because we do not want to deal with the consequences later. LLMs skip nothing. They will cheerfully generate infinite layers of unnecessary complexity because computation is free and attention is not.

    This is a useful frame for how we work with AI tools. When you prompt an LLM to build something, it tends toward maximalism. When a human builds something, constraints force economy. The best prompt engineering might actually be channeling that human instinct, telling the model what to leave out.
